GasAmerica History and Awards

Awards:

  • Paul Dana Leadership in Biofuels Honoree - presented by Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels in honor of those who exemplified leadership in the biofules industry.
  • Partnership Award - awarded by Indiana Senator Lugar for GasAmerica's support with Ethanol.
  • Lugar Energy Patriot Award - awarded by Indiana Senator Lugar for GasAmerica's support with offering customers biodiesel.
  • Listing in the Indiana Business Journal - 27th largest privately held Indiana company.
  • Listing in Convenience Stores News - 75ht ranked convenience store chain.

History:

1916 - Herbert White founded White Petroleum. White Petroleum started with one bulk plant and one delivery truck.

1919 - The first White Petroleum gasoline station was build in Shirley, IN.

1924 - A second bulk plant was started in New Castle, IN with one delivery truck.

1929 - A bulk plant was constructed in Anderson, IN. The company had service stations in Ogden, New Castle, Anderson, and Shirley, IN.

1936 - Herb's son, Keith White, took over the White Petroleum company at the age of 25.

  • Keith purchased the first semi in the area for hauling his own gasoline and fuel oil to and from the bulk plants. He hauled products from Michigan, Ohio, and Kentucky.
  • Keith White set up a degree-day system and budget plan for his fuel oil customers. He expanded to four service stations and several commercial accounts during this time.

1957 - The company established and registered White Flash as its brand name.

1964 -  Keith White died in 1964. Danny, Phillip, and Richard took over the company as the third generation of White's to operate the family business.

  • White Petroleum changed its business philosophy more towards retail rather than wholesale selling. They moved their offices to the north end of Shirley.
  • To keep up with technology, White Petroleum put in their first computer and started a credit card program.
  • The fuel oil business was sold to Sharp Oil of Kingstown.
  • White Petroleum grew to over 33 service stations.

1973 - White Petroleum had to close 13 stations due to the energy crisis and lack of product.

1983 - White Petroleum went through reorganization where warehouses and auto supply stores were liquidated. In December 1983 White Petroleum was reincorporated, as GasAmerica Services, Inc. and Richard White became its president. GasAmerica started with 27 gas stations in both Indiana and Ohio and started to build the image of red, white, and blue and then began concentrating on their tagline "That's Convenience".

1985 - GasAmerica implemented an underground storage tank program and built their first truck stop in Chesterfield and began selling large quantities of fuel.

1988 - GasAmerica purchased a piece of property at I-70 and State Road 109 and built a full-scale truck stop.

1993 - GasAmerica started the task of adding computers to the locations - starting with the largest ones.

1997 - Richard White suffered a heart attack.

1998 -  Richard passed away after a heart transplant surgery. Richards' two children, Stephanie and Keith,  took over the company. Stephanie White became president and Keith White became Vice President of New Construction.

1999 -  The GasAmerica Charitable Foundation was started to further GasAmeria's community donations. The Foundation gives out scholarships to employees and employees' family members as well as raising money for various charities.

2000 - On September 11th, the corporate offices of GasAmerica Services, Inc. moved to Greenfield, IN.

2002 - GasAmerica rolled out its loyalty program with the Convenience CARD. 

2006 - GasAmerica created a program called GasAmerica Hometown Heroes, which awards those citizens who have gone above and beyond.

  • GasAmerica began selling E-85 to customers. The GasAmerica location in Bargersville was the first to offer E-85 (85% ethanol, 15% gasoline). In January 2006, B-2 became available at the Bargersville location and GasAmerica continued to offer B-2 at all new locations afterwards, as well as updating it at location #39 in Greenfield and #51 in Indianapolis.

2007 - GasAmerica made B-10 available to customers at the truck stop location in Knightstown, IN.
